Teenage eco-evangelist Greta Thunberg, who has gone on school-strike to force politicians to ‘panic’ about ‘climate change,’ has addressed the House of Commons and even met the Pope, has proved such a hit among like-minded individuals that she is regarded as a living saint.

Environmentalism is fast becoming a religion, and there is even more religious resonance in the responses of the Great and Good, standing agape at Ms. Thunberg’s uncompromising message and asking each other ‘where did she get all this wisdom?’

And yet there is no mystery about that, since the Swedish youngster has been exposed to their own message — fed the environmentalist doomsday gospel or, to be more precise, the ‘bad news’ — at school, when she was too young to assimilate it and put it into context, a problem made more acute by her Asperger’s syndrome. Even more damaging to infant minds, Greta and other Western children are given to understand that human beings — they themselves — are the problem.       

It is especially ironic to see left-wing progressives and modish media figures, who spend their time jetting around the world lecturing about the environment, hailing the wisdom of youth even while warning that babies are a bigger threat than grown men and women who jet around the world lecturing about the environment.

One such figure is TV personality Chris Packham, who has said he will not have children in order to protect the Planet, and would educate women everywhere to embrace his own negative view of having babies as a personal burden as well as a burden on ‘the planet’.

At the same time, his Wild Justice group has taken legal action to prevent farmers protecting their crops from pigeons, magpies, crows and other feathered pests by making it compulsory for them to take out individual licenses at 36 hours’ notice and ‘record their deaths or the reasons for shooting them’.  

It is only surprising that Wild Justice does not also insist on farmers holding proper dignified funerals for these birds; and while campaigners are lauded for protecting the lives of pigeons — which are in no danger of dying out any time soon — so are campaigners who seek to remove all laws against killing unborn humans, now considered a greater threat to the Planet. While rivers and trees are afforded personhood, unborn babies are denied it.

With wealthy media personalities telling us to live more simply — the rich teaching the poor how to be mean — it can only be a matter of time before pheasant shoots become peasant shoots, and young people who do manage to be born, like Greta Thunberg, can teach their elders how to manage the climate, even when they themselves are on strike from school — for ‘out of the mouths of babes and sucklings’ comes forth praise of their own green Utopia. Poor Greta is just another child sacrifice on the altar of green religion.
