Ben Franklin once famously said, “Honesty is the best policy.” A California man recently discovered the truth of that statement.

According to CBS Sacramento, Mike Vegas had several items from Domino’s Pizza delivered to his house the other day. When he went back to eat the leftovers, he discovered he had received a bonus. A bonus in the form of $1,300 in cash.

Was Vegas the winner of an unknown contest? Not exactly, for he later learned that the sudden windfall was the mistake of an absent-minded delivery man, who was supposed to stop at the bank following the delivery to Vegas.

Vegas returned the money, and as a reward, Domino’s promised him a year’s worth of free pizza. Honesty for the win!

While this is an all-around happy and exciting feel-good story, there’s one troubling component to it. According to CBS, before returning the money “Vegas says he thought about what to do and took to Facebook to ask friends. Some said he should keep the cash.”

If you had been one of Vegas’s friends, would you have given him the same advice? Has society, to its detriment, fallen away from the practice of honesty?
