My great grandfather, Harold Schuler, served in the U.S. Army on the European war theater from December 1917 to May 1919. I’m not sure how much action he saw, but his notebook entry and letter below provides a small glimpse into what soldiers experienced during the “Great War.”

And here are some pages from a letter home that I believe was written on February 25, 1919. (Make sure to read page 12, on the right, first!) It describes my great grandfather’s experience of an air raid while in Germany. (Perhaps some of you war history buffs can help me out here: I know that the Armistice was signed in November 1918, and that the occupation of Germany by American et al. forces took place afterwards… Did some fighting continue to occur during the occupation?)
