Women’s College Volleyball Teams Are Reclaiming Their Sport From Men, One Boycott at a Time

Boycotts are costly, but they work.

This is the lesson female athletes are learning across the United States as they sacrifice short-term gains and glory to reclaim their sports from female-identifying men.

The latest news on this front comes out of Nevada, where a fifth women’s college volleyball team has forfeited their game against San Jose State University, whose roster infamously boasts 6-foot-1 outside/right-side hitter Brayden Fleming (now going by “Blaire Fleming”), a biological male.

Fleming’s unfair advantage was on full display recently, as footage made the rounds on social media showing him spiking the ball directly into an opponent’s face and knocking her to the ground.

The other teams to have taken part in the boycott against SJSU so far are Southern Utah, Utah State, Wyoming, and Boise State.

The announcement by the University of Nevada, Reno’s (UNR) female volleyball team quickly went viral after it was shared on X by swimmer and women’s sports activist Riley Gaines.

As highlighted by Gaines, the UNR team is the first to specifically cite fairness and safety concerns as the reason for their forfeit.

The boycott has been widely praised by pundits and public figures who have followed the trajectory of women’s sport over recent years.

“That’s a strong statement. This is so encouraging to see,” remarked Seth Dillon, CEO and owner of the satirical news site The Babylon Bee.

Rapper and podcaster Zuby commented, “At last. Good for them. May it inspire others.”

Author and commentator Allie Beth Stuckey showed her support as well:

The Nevada team’s decision is a timely reminder that the cultural and legal winds will only shift if a high enough price is paid by those directly affected.

In fact, the brave girls from UNR now find themselves at odds with their own university, which has since released a statement saying the volleyball team’s decision “does not represent” the views of the school and that the game with San Jose will go ahead with or without the players’ participation.

“’The players’ decision and statement were made independently, and without consultation with the University or the athletic department,” their statement read.

The University and its athletic programs are governed by the Nevada Constitution and Nevada law, which strictly protect equality of rights under the law, and that equality of rights shall not be denied or abridged by this state or any of its subdivisions on account of race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, ancestry or national origin.

Politically correct liturgies like the one recited above are now commonplace in our culture. But they inevitably result in stories like Brayden Fleming’s—where unfair advantage, injuries, and discrimination against the voices of reason rule the day.

By including “everyone,” some people are unavoidably disadvantaged. By tolerating “all viewpoints,” certain viewpoints are made verboten. By erasing all rules and boundaries, we simply erect new ones.

Perhaps the greatest irony of the transgender sports phenomenon is that it represents a surreptitious victory for “the patriarchy” that our culture is supposed to be protesting against. As has been wryly observed by X pundit Alice Smith:

Transgenderism is men mansplaining to women what a woman is and then manspreading into women’s toilets, sports halls and jobs. Transgenderism is womanface. Transgenderism is men colonising native female spaces to expand the male empire.

Humor and irony aside, the brave girls at the University of Nevada, Reno have shone a bright light on the path ahead.

In response to a culture that says yes to everything, demands constant and immediate gratification, and indulges every appetite, they have moved in the opposite spirit.

Refusal. Resistance. Costly sacrifice.

Here is the surest path to victory.

Great article by Kurt Mahlburg! My sister-in-law Kim Bueltel is an excellent athlete who won a University volley scholarship years ago. In this mixed up world, which allows biologic males in women‘s sports, few young females will be able to attend their dream of a college scholarship.

About 50 years ago title 9 required equal varsity spots in men and women’s sports. This resulted in schools canceling wrestling and baseball for men. Now under title 9 we have this.
The government giveth and the government changeth to meet the whims of the ones with the most money.

Women's Volleyball teams are also increasing real men's interest in their sport, one pair of spandex shorts at a time.

They did it to themselves. I'm just waiting for the day when these same people support men's right to have male-only spaces.
